Description

Simple to install, simple to use – The Trig TT23 and TT23G units are the next evolution in Trig compact Transponders; trusted by pilots worldwide for their reliability and innovative design. Available with built-in GPS for the first time, this next generation of transponders is also lighter, smaller and more compact, designed to reduce space and weight in your aircraft. The TT23 fits seamlessly into the tightest panel spaces, offering an efficient, lightweight solution that maximises your cockpit’s real estate.

Certified and suitable for both VFR and IFR flight, the TT23 class 1 Mode S device provides 250 Watts of output power. These transponders ensure visibility to commercial, military, and general aviation traffic, making navigation through busy airspace more predictable and stress-free. Trig transponders are future-proof, with full ADS-B compatibility that boosts your visibility and enhances flight safety.

Trig is the leader in advanced technology, meeting the latest FAA TSO-C166b certification standard for ADS-B. Designed for simplicity, the TT23 features a bright, easy-to-read display and includes a built-in altitude encoder for added convenience. . The TT23 Transponder can be paired with GPS units like the TN70 or TN70A, and a number third-party sources, for ADS-B out. Coupled with an appropriate GPS the TT23 is suitable for certified aircraft to meet the mandate requirements in the United States – making this solution suitable for pilots globally.

The TT23G takes it further with a built-in GPS, certified to ETSO-C199, the ideal choice for pilots seeking an integrated ADS-B Out solution. This is suitable for experimental and light sport aircraft wishing ADS-B mandate compliance in the United States. TT23G is also suitable for those wishing to voluntarily equip with ADS-B out – for enhanced visibility and safety.

Product Design

All Trig compact transponders are made up of two main parts: a compact control head with a built-in altitude encoder, saving both space and cost, and a separate hardware box that can be installed anywhere on the airframe. The control head is just 54mm (2 3/25”) deep and fits in a panel with a 57mm (2 ¼”) round hole or a smaller compact mount – it comes with all the necessary fittings for either installation option. Our compact transponders are highly efficient, while commonly used in various general aviation aircraft, they are particularly well-suited for gliders and balloons when paired with an auxiliary battery.

Trig’s compact transponders are easy to use, offering a clear, bright display that is easy to read in any lighting condition and can be manually dimmed. The control head is also splash-proof, making it an excellent choice for open cockpit and seaplane operations.

Power Output and ADS-B

The Trig  TT23/TT23G has 250 watts nominal power output, which makes it a class 1 transponder and meets international standards for 1090ES ADS-B Out (TSO C166b).

Compatible Trig products

ADS-B enhances safety and visibility – your investment in a TT23 transponder is future proof. Trig has a matching certified GPS position source that is highly affordable called the TN72. This is ideal for ADS-B voluntary equipage. The TN72 can even be used to meet the 2020 mandate by light-sport, experimental and homebuilt types in the U.S.

Our TN70 GPS position source is suitable for certified Part 23 aircraft that need a TSO-C145 position source, for operations in 2020 rule ADS-B airspace using a TT22 transponder.

The TT23G transponder has an internal GPS sensor and therefore does not require the use of the TN72 or TN70 GPS units. The internal GPS is certified to ETSO-C199, suitable for voluntary equipage and meets the 2020 mandate for light-sport, experimental and homebuilt aircraft in the U.S.

Both the TT23 and TT23G are suitable for customers in the U.S. who follow FAA 14 CFR 91.227 that requires a compliant ADS-B Out solution using a Class 1 transponder.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the TT23 and the TT23G?
Both models have the same physical dimensions and advantages of size and ease of installation. The main difference is that the TT23G has an internal GPS sensor (that is certified to ETSO-C199) where as the TT23 requires an eternal GPS to achieve ADS-B out.

For FAA rule airspace the TT23G can be used in light sport and experimental aircraft. Outside of FAA rule airspace the TT23G can be used by all aircraft types for voluntary equipage. For certified aircraft in FAA rule airspace the TT23 can be paired with a suitable GPS for ADS-B compliance.

Is the controller display visible in all lightling conditions?
Yes! The LCD display is clear and crisp in all lighting, full sunlight generates a very clear contrast and in dull or dark lighting the inbuilt lighting ensures the unit remains clear and legible. The controller has a backlight and manual dimming can be selected to increase or decrease brightness.

Is the controller easy to use?
Yes! One handed operation is simple. The Squawk code is easily entered using fingers to rotate the ‘CODE’ dial whilst the thumb is used to press the ‘ENT’ key. All operations can be performed whilst wearing flying gloves.

How does the compact fit or the round mount installation work?
The transponder control head, the TC20 can be installed either as a space saving compact mount or in a 57 mm round hole. Click on the ‘specification tab’ of this web page to see an image of the installation kit, in the technical images area. This photo features all the components contained in the install kit. This includes the two plastic blanking plates and long screws that are used to fit the TC20 control head into a 57 mm round hole. Once installed, the full round mount is a tough and durable solution, it looks great in both modern and vintage aircraft. The kit also includes a template to assist you in cutting an accurate compact mount in the panel, if that is required.

Can I use the Transponder in open cockpit flying?
The TC20 controller is splash proof. This makes it suitable for use in open cockpit aircraft, where the weather can sometimes be in the cockpit and not just outside it!

Does the TT23 have an STC?
Trig are currently working with our long term STC partner, Matrea Aeropaces Design, to complete an STC with over 500 fixed wing types recognized by both the FAA and EASA. This STC is expected to apply to the TT23 when connected to a compatible WAAS GPS position source. It is not expected to cover the TT23G model.

In the U.S. installing a compliant ADS-B Out solution (in a certified aircraft) requires your Trig transponder to utilize a certified WAAS GPS, this provides a compliant ADS-B position source. The FAA also requires that a certified ADS-B installation is completed in accordance with an FAA STC approval (Supplementary Type Certificate).

Our ADS-B STC’s are available free of charge and cover hundreds of aircraft types. Trig STC approvals allow the use of popular WAAS GPS navigators too – making installation more practical and cost-effective. Our TA70 GPS antenna has also been added to our STC equipment list.

In the US, how can I use TT23 for ADS-B Out compliance?
The TT23 – when paired with a suitable GPS source such as the TN70 or other certified WAAS GPS position source / IFR navigator – is a rule-compliant ADS-B Out solution in experimental and LSA aircraft. The TT23 is TSO’d as a Mode S transponder and may be installed and used as such in type-certificated aircraft. However, the STC for utilizing its ADS-B Out capability is pending. This may limit ADS-B operations in type certificated aircraft (see above FAQ).

The TT23G – with built-in GPS – is an ADS-B Out rule-compliant solution for experimental and LSA aircraft. It is not approved for use in type-certificated aircraft for use in ADS-B Out rule airspace. It can, however, be employed outside rule airspace where pilots wish to enhance their visibility and traffic awareness by participating in the ADS-B system.
